What you need to start boxing

To start practising boxing, gloves are one of the main pieces of equipment. They allow you to work on striking against different surfaces and perform technical exercises with a partner or trainer.

As you progress in your training, you can incorporate different equipment to expand the possibilities of each session. The punch bag allows you to work on combinations and striking, while the speed bag introduces coordination and precision exercises. For partner training, focus mitts and Thai pads allow you to practise different combinations and technical movements.

At Fitness Tech, you will also find boxing sticks to complement coordination, reaction and evasion training, as well as MMA gloves for those who practise mixed martial arts.

Gloves: how to choose the ounces

Ounces (oz) indicate the weight of the glove and are related to the amount of padding. The choice depends on the type of training, the user's weight and how the glove will be used.

As a general guideline, 10 to 12 oz gloves are commonly used for bag work, while 14 oz gloves offer an intermediate option for general training. 16 oz gloves have more padding and are commonly used for sparring sessions.

These guidelines are for reference. When choosing your gloves, you should also consider the fit, wrist support and type of training you will be doing.

    Hand protection: wraps and gloves

Hand protection is an important aspect during combat sports training. Hand wraps are commonly used under gloves to provide support for the hands and wrists.

MMA gloves meet different needs. Their design leaves the fingers free to facilitate grappling and work specific to mixed martial arts.

The type of protection should be chosen according to the discipline and the type of training to be performed.

Striking equipment: heavy bags, reflex bags, and shields

Striking equipment allows different aspects of training to be worked on depending on the equipment used. Heavy bags allow users to practice punches and combinations, while reflex bags offer a different stimulus based on movement control, precision, and coordination.

To work with a partner or trainer, boxing mitts and focus mitts allow specific punching and precision exercises to be planned. Boxing sticks complement this work with exercises related to reaction and dodging.

Boxing heavy bags: weight, filling, and anchoring

The weight of the boxing heavy bag influences its behavior during training. A heavier heavy bag offers greater stability against impacts, while a lighter heavy bag may move more during punching.

As a general reference, the heavy bag's weight can be approximately between one third and one half of the user's body weight. The choice also depends on the training intensity and whether the heavy bag will be used by one person or several users.

At Fitness Tech, we offer a 44 kg boxing heavy bag. Before installing a suspended heavy bag, it is important to check that the support system and the structure where it is installed are suitable for the loads generated during training.

Boxing reflex bags and reflex training

The boxing reflex bag complements the work performed with the heavy bag. Its movement introduces an additional component of coordination, precision, and punching control.

This type of equipment can be used to vary the session's exercises and work on different stimuli related to reaction and coordination.

The Fitness Tech collection includes a boxing reflex bag as part of its combat sports equipment.

Focus mitts, Thai pads, and sticks for coaches

Focus mitts, Thai pads, and boxing sticks are particularly suitable for training with another person. They allow a coach or partner to introduce different exercises and combinations during the session.

Focus mitts are mainly used to work on accuracy and punching combinations. Thai pads provide an impact surface for different striking exercises, while boxing sticks can be used for exercises related to reaction, coordination, and slipping.

MMA equipment and other combat sports

MMA combines different disciplines and requires equipment adapted to its characteristics. MMA gloves are used in this discipline, with a design that keeps the fingers free to facilitate grappling and other movements specific to training.

In addition to MMA, striking equipment can be used in different types of training related to combat sports. The choice of equipment will depend on the discipline practiced and the type of exercise to be performed.

Differences between boxing gloves and MMA gloves

Boxing gloves cover the hand and feature padding designed for striking practice. MMA gloves have a different design and leave the fingers free to facilitate grappling.

For this reason, each type of glove meets the needs of a different discipline. Specific boxing gloves are used for boxing, while MMA gloves adapted to the specific demands of mixed martial arts are used for MMA.

How to choose according to your level and space

The equipment you need depends on the type of training, your level, and the available space. The solutions required by someone starting to train at home are not the same as those needed by a gym or specialized center that needs to equip a combat area.

    For training at home

For a home gym, the available space is one of the main aspects you should consider. Gloves allow you to perform different exercises without taking up installation space, while a heavy bag or a speed bag requires a suitable area for use.

If you train individually, you can combine gloves and striking equipment to create different sessions. When training with another person, focus mitts, Thai pads, and boxing sticks expand the training possibilities.

For gyms and martial arts centers

In a gym or martial arts center, equipment selection should take into account the number of users, available space, and type of sessions to be held.

Heavy bags allow you to create a dedicated striking area, while focus mitts and Thai pads facilitate partner or coach-assisted training. The equipment should be arranged so that each item can be used properly and the training area remains organized.

    Materials, durability, and maintenance

Boxing equipment is subjected to impact and repetitive movements, so it is important to pay attention to the condition of the materials and construction elements.

For products such as gloves, heavy bags, focus mitts, and Thai pads, factors such as the outer covering, seams, and padding affect their performance and durability.

To keep the equipment in good condition, it is recommended to keep it clean, dry, and properly ventilated after training sessions.

For striking equipment, it is also advisable to periodically check the seams and attachment points to ensure they show no visible signs of wear.

    Preguntas frecuentes

The essentials are gloves, hand wraps to protect your knuckles and wrists, and comfortable clothing. As soon as you train with a partner, you’ll need a mouthguard. If you’re going to train at home, add a punching bag or a speed bag and a suitable anchoring system.

Ounces measure the padding, not the size. As a general reference: 10 to 12 oz for bag work and people under 70 kg, 14 oz for mixed training, and 16 oz for sparring or weights over 80 kg. The more ounces, the more protection and less speed.

A starter setup (gloves and hand wraps) costs around €40. Adding a punching bag and anchor brings the total to approximately €200-€350. A complete setup with a speed bag, focus mitts, and protective gear costs between €400 and €600.

A common guideline is between one-third and one-half of the user's body weight. A 40 to 45 kg bag suits most adults well and allows power training without the bag becoming difficult to control. For shared gym use, a heavier bag is advisable.

The three options are ceiling anchoring with a chemical anchor in a concrete slab, a wall bracket bolted to a load-bearing wall, or a freestanding bracket with a weighted base. The anchoring must support several times the static weight of the bag due to the impact effect. If there are any doubts about the structure, it is advisable to consult a technician.

The boxing glove fully closes the fist and prioritizes padding for striking. The MMA glove leaves the fingers free to grip and work on grappling, with much less padding. They are not interchangeable: hitting a heavy bag with MMA gloves increases the risk of injury.

They are the equipment you hold, not the equipment you hit. Focus mitts work on precision and punch combinations, Thai pads absorb kicks and knee strikes, and sticks train reaction and evasion. They are essential equipment for any trainer or for partner training.

Yes. Shadow boxing, jump rope, and coordination exercises cover much of the training without striking equipment. That said, without a heavy bag, speed bag, or focus mitts, it is difficult to work on power and the feel of real impact.

At a minimum: punching bags with anchoring sized for the slab, a technical floor beneath the striking area, one set of focus mitts and Thai pads per coach, and loaner gloves in several ounce weights. The number of bags is calculated based on the class's simultaneous capacity.
